Better Change Director Rob Mabbett argues that collaboration is key ahead of appearance at January’s EAG Expo

Rob Mabbett, Director of Engagement at Better Change has highlighted the organisation’s progressive relationship with EAG Expo describing it as a ‘template for collaboration between stakeholders in the safer gambling space.’

Previewing the Better Change appearance in the Bacta Business Lounge at January’s EAG he stated: “EAG has a vital role to play in shaping the future direction of the UK land-based gambling sector, particularly as the relationship between regulation and player protection is paramount. Maintaining a progressive relationship between the industry and safer gambling organisations has, in my opinion, never been more important.”

Mabbett believes the current climate makes collaboration essential rather than optional. “There has been increasing pressure from the statutory levy commissioning bodies on charities to distance themselves from the industry,” he said. “However, we cannot deliver an effective harm prevention strategy without all stakeholders being involved.”

In terms of incorporating safer gambling into the business culture Mabbett is clear that the land-based sector has a strong track record of doing so dating back over 30-years. He argued: “UK trade association Bacta, which owns EAG, was the first to work with Paul Bellringer OBE who went on to establish GamCare.

“More recently, Bacta and its members have responded positively to government and Gambling Commission challenges around safer gambling practices, earning public praise from both Gambling Minister Baroness Twycross and Gambling Commission chief executive Andrew Rhodes.”

Looking ahead to the show Mabbett said: “Better Change is different to other organisations that work in the safer gambling space because we are here to enable gambling by promoting Positive Play. Our products and our consultancy are formed from years of experience working in gambling so we understand the challenges that operators face on a daily basis.

“Our role is not to block, ban, restrict or stigmatise gambling, we are here to help operators grow their business in a sustainable way by navigating the regulatory landscape whilst continuing to provide a great customer experience. For Better Change, continued engagement at EAG reflects our belief that collaboration remains the most effective route to raising awareness, protecting players and keeping land-based gambling engaging, fun and safe.

“Over the years the land-based sector has had its share of challenges, but its resilience has always won through and I expect that the future roadmap to providing great entertainment to an ever-evolving customer base will be the dominant themes discussed, debated and on-display at EAG, SIE Expo and the London Casino and Gaming Show.”
