From Harrods to a Hospitality venue near you John Marks is ‘Defined By Design’

With a reputation earned as an established designer of special occasion wear, boasting clients including Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis, John Marks now focusses exclusively on the corporate sector. Drawing on its heritage and design expertise the brand has grown to become an international leader in the supply of innovative, on-trend but practical uniforms for the entirety of the hospitality industry. Managing Director Carolyne Hirsh looks ahead to the company’s appearance on stand M40 at the first London Casino and Gaming Show which is part of the EAG experience.

Can you explain the background to the brand and how it has developed?

Prior to 1980 John Marks was an established British design house renowned for special occasion wear.  We were regularly being asked to produce special outfits for hotels, casinos and restaurants and it became clear that our fashion orientated corporate uniforms had an exciting future! We now supply companies world-wide with a comprehensive service for men and women from front to back of house staff.

Which sectors do you supply to – is it just casinos or does it include all hospitality venues such as Arcades and Family Entertainment Centres?

We design and manufacture garments for all sectors of the hospitality industry including of course casinos’ (land and on line), arcades, family entertainment centres, hotels, restaurants, night clubs and all types of gaming and leisure venues. We have both multinational and individual clients boasting between 20 and 2,000 staff.

How many new ranges will you be showing at EAG?

We do not show ranges or collections as such.  Instead we will be using the London Casino and Gaming Show at EAG to present pieces across the spectrum – some of which can be bespoke - designed and made in the UK - and some of which can be customised according to the requirements of the brand. We offer everything from doormen to chefs, reception, dealers, as well as maintenance and housekeeping.  We also offer particular items for all types of food and beverage outlets and anything else that maybe required such as hats, shoes, and all types of accessories.

What makes a good uniform?

The secret of a good uniform is fourfold:  style, comfort, durability, and most importantly cost/value for money.

How frequently should a brand change the style of its uniforms?

A brand does not necessarily need to change designs often particularly if it is iconic - for instance the Hippodrome, however, the actual garments need to be replaced as soon as they start to look tired.  Obviously, if a venue refurbishes then a new uniform should also be created.

What are the latest trends in uniform design – is there a move towards sustainability for example?

Trends in uniform design have not changed significantly, although we have noticed that the traditional casino long glamorous gown - as worn by the Colony - is  being replaced by more casual attire.

What does success look like, what do you want to achieve?

Success for us is quite simple – it’s about using EAG to open new markets and connect with new clients.
