A Quick Chat with Rob Wheeler, Founder and Managing Director of RBW Systems
One of the industry’s most accomplished and respected innovators Rob Wheeler expands on what he describes as ‘proper multi-tasking’, why EAG is a must attend, names the three people who have had the biggest impact on his career and the importance of not fearing failure.
What was your first career job and wage?
Within the industry, as a Project Manager at Honeyframe Systems in Telford starting in Jan 2000, where I was part of the team that delivered the Cashmaster machine management system to a wide variety of customers across the UK Bingo, AGC, FEC and Pub Retail sectors: ATEI 2000 held at Earl’s Court was an eye-opening introduction to the industry!
What was your greatest accomplishment and what are you most proud of?
Toss-up between delivering the first integrated player loyalty, TITO and machine management system to the UK casino industry during the late 2000’s, and the journey over the past 10-years setting up and establishing RBW Systems as a leading supplier of machine management and cashless payment solutions to the UK. I have loved every minute and wouldn’t change anything.
Who has had the biggest influence on your career?
Difficult question as there have been so many people that helped me over the past 25-years. But I’ve narrowed it down to three; David Valente, Gala Bingo, for operational knowledge of multi-site machine management operations; Ian Wheatley, London Clubs (now Metropolitan Casinos) for developing effective player loyalty programs; and lastly the late Ron Gallaway at Bally Technologies a legend amongst the world gaming systems community, a great mentor and close friend.
What are you looking forward to most from January’s EAG?
Catching up with existing and new customers as well as fellow suppliers. EAG is one of the few occasions during the year where you have everyone under one roof for three-days so take advantage at your own behest. EAG will see the official launch of the Guardian Compliance product, developed in association with Bacta as a replacement for the existing Bacta Portal, a terrific opportunity to develop a leading product based on lessons learned.
What role have you enjoyed most?
Setting up and running RBW Systems: it has given me the freedom and agility to deliver what I believe in and work with customers/end users without board or senior management interference.
Who has been the most influential person in your life and why?
My wife Pauline, who has supported me steadfastly over the past 33-years, whilst forging her own successful career in finance and industry as a Chartered Accountant, as well as being a terrific mother to our two sons….now that’s proper multi-tasking!
How do you manage stress?
Better than I used to be, at least that’s what I think!
What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?
You only have one life so live it. Don’t rush decisions, step back, give it some thought and go with your gut instinct, and don’t fear failure.
In a sentence what would you change about the industry?
Promote integrated technology and relegate the nay-sayers/technophobes.
One piece of advice or insight that has changed your life and from whom?
‘If you last more than six months in the industry you will never leave it’ - Peter Robinson, whilst we worked together at Honeyframe Systems.
What’s your Desert Island Disc?
Oasis – Don’t Look Back in Anger.
